How to Rescue Animals in Into the Fire

A dog is still a life. Build the kennel before you pick one up in the ash.

Animal Rescue

Starward has sold animal rescue as part of the fantasy since the store page: people and animals, dogs and birds, lives that are not loot. For most of 2026 that promise lived in trailers, interviews, and camp pets you could already scratch for morale. Field animal rescue is new in Open Playtest no.2 (live on Steam until 7 September 2026). The studio’s own post is blunt: you can bring animals back to the growing community, and you should build them a proper shelter before you rescue them.

This page splits three jobs that the rest of the wiki used to blur: camp pets you already have, field animals you can now extract, and the shelter that makes the second job legal. Read rescue survivors for carry physics and camp hub for food, water, and morale. Read this page so you do not drop a dog on a plank because the kennel was never placed.

What changed in this playtest

July 2026’s “What’s Next” note still said the team was working on animal rescue and was not ready to show it. The August 31 wave shipped it. That is why a May VOD where you only pet the camp dog is not a contradiction. It is an older build. If you are in the current Steam test, treat animals as extractable cargo with a camp prerequisite, not as scenery.

Public facts, and only public facts:

  • Official copy always listed people and animals as valid saves.
  • GamingBolt’s interview quoted the CMO: success includes a person, a dog, or a bird.
  • Playtest VODs already had a camp dog and cat you could pet for morale and a scrap of loot, plus a dog shelter as a buildable.
  • Open Playtest no.2 adds field rescue and warns you to build shelter first.

We do not invent a breed list, a leash key, or a hidden farm. If your build shows a goat icon, believe the UI. If it does not, do not steal a screenshot from a trailer and call it a spawn table.

Build the shelter first

Camp is the gate. Starward’s sentence is the SOP:

  1. Read the daily report. If food and water are already thin, do not add a mouth that cannot work a bench. See survivor priority.
  2. Place the animal shelter / dog shelter from building mode before you queue a run that might return with a live animal. June notes already added reminders when you lacked a Campfire or Well; treat the kennel the same way.
  3. Confirm you have spare bed-equivalent space and a reason. Morale is a real meter in playtests. Animals feed it. They also consume attention you might have spent on a medic.
  4. Only then pack a city or supply loadout that still has a free carry.

If you extract an animal into a camp with no shelter, you have failed the tutorial the new build is trying to teach. The point of the warning is not cruelty. It is that the hub is a living place, and a life without a roof is how morale and hygiene collapse between expeditions.

In the field

Carry rules do not become cute because the survivor has paws.

  • You still hold them. This is not a magic backpack. Controls for interact, drop, stamina, and planks apply.
  • Animals are not “named quest first” unless the board printed a name. A dog on a side street is extra cargo. Zoe is still the specialist. Use the priority card.
  • Planks, ladders, and ziplines are the skill check. A small body can still ruin a roll or a kick. Practice on New Sindra before Crimson Pass. See maps.
  • Fire spirits and bombs do not care. Suppress a corridor, move, extract. Do not duel while holding a bird. Extinguishing weapons exist to open a path.
  • Abort lines stay honest. If the RV is leaving, the animal is not more sacred than a human specialist you already committed to. Starward has said you cannot save everyone. That includes the cute ones.

Ash blowers and life-sign detectors still earn their slot. Official feature lists tease lives under ash. Scan twice: once for the quest marker, once for the extra heartbeat the marker ignored.

Back at camp

Playtesters already learned that petting the dog or cat is a morale action with a loot scrap attached. Keep doing it. It is not a joke button. A settlement that never touches its animals is a settlement that is leaving a free morale tick on the table while threat climbs.

After a field rescue:

  • Check food and water the same morning. Extra lives drink.
  • Talk to people. Some survivors will care that you brought a dog. Some will care that you did not bring their neighbour. That tension is the writing.
  • Do not chain three animal extracts because a screenshot performed well. The camp hub fails in the kitchen, not on the volcano.

How this fits the rest of the loop

Animal rescue is not a side mode. It is another way the hub remembers what you value. Interviews say the hub expands with people and animals, opening relationships and systems. Treat a successful kennel the way you treat a new workshop: it is progression, and it is a bill.

If you are still in a May–June save mentally, unlearn “animals are only camp flavour.” If you are reading this after 7 September 2026, check playtest to see whether the wave is still open. The mechanic is aimed at Early Access. The shelter-first rule is the part most likely to survive retunes, because it is the same philosophy as wells and campfires: do not import a life you cannot house.

Practice once on a one-skull street: shelter built, one animal, no extra civilian, RV on time. Then stop. The second animal is a morale decision, not a collection quest. The island is not a zoo. It is a disaster, and you are the person with the suit.
