Extinguishing Weapons in Into the Fire

These tools put fire out of the way. They are not a conventional shooter kit.

Extinguishing Weapons

Into the Fire’s arsenal looks like a shooter until you read the ammo type: water, suppressant, and improvised volcanologist gear. Starward’s extended gameplay trailer and the August 2026 expedition diary name the same core set — fire extinguisher, suppression pistol, extinguishing shotgun, fire-bomb launcher, hose — plus the axe you will still forget to repair. This guide explains how to think with those tools. Rankings and loadout grids live on the weapons tier list and expedition loadouts.

If you came here from a tactical FPS, unlearn magazine discipline and learn tank discipline. If you came here from Firefighting 2014, unlearn a single hose and learn a kit that also has to scare off fire spirits.

The job of a weapon

Official language is consistent: tools are designed not to kill, but to control chaos. In the street that means three jobs.

  1. Open a path. Fire blocks alleys, loot, and people. Spray a corridor, walk through, stop spraying.
  2. Protect a carry. A person in your arms cannot wait for a perfect cone. Short bursts, then move. See rescue.
  3. Discourage spirits. Trailers show jellyfish-like fire entities. You suppress them the way you suppress a wall of flame: hit the phenomenon, do not duel it for style points while the RV is live. Extraction cares about the clock more than the clip.

Anything else — decorative overkill, emptying a launcher into a street that was already passable — is how playtesters run dry and then die to a door.

Tool by tool

Back-mounted extinguisher. The diary treats this as non-negotiable. It clears basic flames and basic spirits. It also runs out. Craft tanks in camp the night before, not in the burning kitchen of New Sindra.

Suppression pistol. Precision jet. Use it on a doorway, a spirit at range, or a fuse of fire crawling toward a plank. Bad at panic cones. Good as a default when you are already carrying someone and cannot shoulder a larger rig.

Extinguishing shotgun. Cone. This is the “I need the alley now” answer. Playtest footage loves it in interiors. The cost is ammo and the temptation to spam. Pair with Breacher-style movement so you enter the wet gap instead of admiring it.

Fire-bomb launcher. Area tool. Official copy says it carves paths and fights phenomena. It will also deny your path if you bounce a shot into the only stair. Save it for wide plazas, spirit clusters, and last-ditch RV approaches.

Hose. Slow, heavy, honest. Good when you can plant your feet. Bad on Ruins climbs. If the district is vertical, leave it.

Axe and kick. Not extinguishers, but they are how weapons get to the fire. Destructible walls got durability buffs after testers smashed them too fast; axes still die if you farm crates. Kick cost was lowered and a Kicker perk exists. Use both as keys, not as a second combat loop.

Fire as a system, not a texture

Preview pieces describe dynamic spread, rising temperature, and routes that vanish. That is why a weapon that “wins” a screenshot can still lose a run: you extinguished the wrong plane of the building and the staircase became a chimney. Spray the route you will actually walk with a body, then stop. The hazards page covers lava and bombs that water will not cancel.

Starward has said they tested multiple extinguishing feels after player feedback and are still balancing toward the more immersive option. If a May VOD shows instant deletion of a wall of fire and your August build does not, you are not missing a secret upgrade. The system moved.

Loadout logic

Bring two fire tools that do different shapes (pistol + shotgun, or extinguisher + launcher), one breach tool, and one mobility gadget. That sentence is the entire mid-game. Details sit in the planner. Temple-style missions mentioned in German preview coverage may later reward fire resistance; until that is in your build, do not dump the extinguisher for a relic magnet.

Practice

  1. Extinguish a door, pass, ignore the rest of the room’s glamour flames.
  2. Extinguish a spirit just long enough to cross, then run.
  3. Use the launcher once on a plaza, then put it away for the rest of the map.
  4. Finish a one-skull extract with tank remaining. That leftover is skill, not cowardice.

Weapons in Into the Fire are how you buy seconds. Spend them on seconds that get a person onto the RV, not on a cleaner street for the trailer in your head.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is this an FPS?

No. Third-person extraction survival. Guns spray suppressant. The scoreboard is lives, not kills.

Which tool should beginners equip first?

Axe plus back-mounted extinguisher. Add the shotgun when interiors start eating you. Rankings: weapons tier list.

Can I kill fire spirits for loot?

Treat them as blockers. Farming them while the RV is up is how extracts fail.

Do weapons need camp crafts?

Yes. Tanks, bombs, and durability are part of the morning loop in camp.
